As a videographer I’ve been repeatedly asked..” Should I have my videographer film our event in HD High-Definition)?” and the answer is simple…Depends. Ok so maybe the answer is simple but the explanation behind it may be a little more indepth..High Definition Video is a fickle friend unless it is used properly you may end up spending money on High Definition video but getting a lower quality picture than Standard Definition .
The two main things to consider are, Budget and lighting.
Budget: As with every aspect of planning your event, you pay for better quality. Filming in HD usually increase the price by 35%-75% depending on the videographer. But just because you bump to HD doesn’t always mean you get a better product mainly due to….
Lighting: Lighting is crucial for good quality HD footage! We are all familiar watching football games And TV shows in high definition and expect our finished videos to have that quality .. But the truth is there are millions of watts thrown on to a football stadium to properly light every corner for HD broadcast. Lighting designers have HOURS to light sets for your favorite show… If you are having an event outdoors during the day with tons of beautiful natural sun then you are fine. Most events though are held inside and have very modest lighting. Setting up elaborate lighting sets would not only be very expensive, but will also change the mood of your party.. HD video will look very grainy and possibly out of focus if the “scene” is not lit properly…
So High Definition is still at an early stage for event video. It is always risky and may not give you the results you expect. Technology is always improving and soon HD will be a lot easier to come across and shoot safer.
We do have HD capabilites and have shoot some beautiful footage with my cameras. If you are interested in getting HD upgrades please feel free to contact me for a consultation.
